Here in the leafy highlands near the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro, Marangu can feel like one of Tanzania’s greenest towns. It’s also a place where everything revolves around expeditions to climb Africa’s highest mountain. Soak up the greenery, enjoy learning about local Chagga culture, and acclimatize by walking along trails that wind through great stands of trees.

Stay as high on Mt Kilimanjaro as you're allowed to sleep, at Kibo Hut at an altitude of 4703m. The hut is a less-than-two-hour walk from the summit of the mountain. Everyone who reaches here has done some serious walking so the sense of shared achievement is everywhere in the people you'll meet. Sleep in simple bunk beds and enjoy the alpine desert that surrounds the hut.

You're sleeping above the tree line when you stay at Horombo Hut. It lies on the treeless moorlands at an altitude of 3720m. As in all of the Mt Kilimanjaro huts along the Marangu Route, you'll sleep in simple bunk beds and there will be plenty of other climbers passing through. The views close to the hut are stunning.
